How to Update the Firmware of Your Robotiq Device

Step-by-step instructions for safe and supported firmware upgrades

Firmware updates can resolve bugs or introduce compatibility improvements. However, we do not recommend updating the firmware unless your unit is experiencing specific issues. In some cases, new firmware may slightly change the gripper’s behavior or create new issues.

This article explains when and how to update the firmware of Robotiq products using the Robotiq Universal Upgrader.

Information

1. Compatible Devices

The Robotiq Universal Upgrader supports firmware updates for the following:

  • 2-Finger Grippers (2F-85, 2F-140)

  • Hand-E Gripper

  • EPick Vacuum Gripper

  • I/O Coupling

  • Robotiq Screwdriver (SD-100)

  • Screw Feeder (SF-300)

For the Robotiq Force Torque Sensor, please refer to this separate guide.

2. What You’ll Need

For 2F, Hand-E, EPick, and the Robotiq Screwdriver:

  • FTDI driver software (included with the Robotiq User Interface)

  • Coupling + 1m cable (GRP-CPL-XXX)

  • 10m communication cable (CBL-COM-2065-10-HF or CBL-COM-2073-10-HF)

  • RS485 to USB converter (ACC-ADT-USB-RS485)

  • 24V power source (e.g., robot controller or equivalent)

For I/O Coupling and the Robotiq Screw Feeder:

  • USB to micro-USB cable

You’ll find the latest firmware versions on the Robotiq support site:

  1. Navigate to Select Your Product

  2. Go to Software > Firmware Update

4. Performing the Firmware Update

⚠️ Important: Once the update begins, ensure the device stays powered and connected. Interruptions may permanently damage the unit.

    • Use the RS-485 to USB converter for 2F, Hand-E, EPick, AirPick, or Screwdriver.

    • Use a USB to micro-USB cable for I/O Coupling or Screw Feeder.

    • For the Screw Feeder, turn off its power switch—USB will power it.

  2. Download and extract the Robotiq Universal Upgrader from Support Website

  3. Launch the software by running robotiq_upgrader_X.X.X.X.exe

  4. Click Next to begin

  5. Select your device from the list

  6. Click Upgrade to start the process

  7. Wait while the firmware installs. Upon completion, the software will display the new firmware version
