How to Change the ID of a Robotiq Gripper

Use the Robotiq User Interface (RUI) to assign a new ID to your gripper

Context

When using multiple Robotiq grippers on the same Modbus RTU network, each device must have a unique ID. This article explains how to change a gripper’s ID using the Robotiq User Interface (RUI), ensuring proper communication and avoiding conflicts.

Before You Start

Make sure you have the following:

  • A Robotiq gripper

  • A USB-to-RS485 converter and compatible wiring

  • The Robotiq User Interface (RUI) software installed on your PC (Download the Robotiq User Interface)

  • A Windows PC

  • Power supply for the gripper

Steps to Change the ID via RUI

1. Connect the gripper to the Robotiq User Interface
    • Connect the gripper to the 10 m cable, then to the RS485 to USB converter.

    • Plug the converter into your computer.

    • Power the gripper via robot or an external 24V 1A source.

    • In the RUI, select the gripper model you're testing.

    • Once your device is powered and connected:

      • Click Auto Connect in the RUI.

      • The software will scan for any connected unit and establish communication automatically.

    • If you have some problem of connection, please refer to this article : How to connect your unit to the Robotiq User Interface (RUI)?

2. Change the ID
  • Navigate to the “MODBUS RTU Parameters” tab

  • Find the section labeled Slave ID

  • Enter the new ID (must be between 01 and 10)

  • Click Apply

Conclusion

Changing the ID of a Robotiq gripper ensures proper multi-device communication on RS-485 networks.
