Why Can a Finger on the 3-Finger Gripper Move Freely?

A freely moving finger usually means the internal bronze gear is broken

Context

When one of the fingers on your 3-Finger Adaptive Gripper can be moved manually without any resistance, even while the gripper is powered and activated, it indicates an internal mechanical failure. Specifically, the bronze gear inside the finger mechanism is likely broken.

1. Symptom

  • One finger moves loosely, without motor resistance

  • Happens even after proper activation

  • No grasping force from the affected finger

2. Cause

  • The bronze gear assembly inside the finger is broken

  • This gear is responsible for translating motor motion into finger movement

  • When broken, the finger is no longer constrained or driven

3. Diagnosis

To confirm the issue:

  • Power and activate the gripper as usual

  • Try moving each finger manually

  • If one finger moves easily without resistance, the gear is damaged

4. Solution – Replace the Bronze Gear

You can perform this repair on-site using the AGS-GEAR-001 replacement kit.
