UR15 Compatibility with Robotiq Products

Overview of compatible Robotiq products for the UR15 and explanation of palletizing solution limitations

The UR15 is compatible with several Robotiq products and solutions for material handling, machine tending, inspection, and automation applications. However, Robotiq palletizing solutions are not supported on the UR15 platform.

This article provides a high-level compatibility overview and explains why Robotiq has not developed palletizing solutions specifically for the UR15.

Compatibility Overview

The following matrix summarizes the compatibility status between the UR15 and Robotiq products.

Palletizing Solution Compatibility

Robotiq palletizing solutions, including the PE Series and AX Series, are not supported on the UR15.

This includes:

  • PE palletizing solutions
  • AX palletizing solutions
  • Any dedicated “PE15” or “AX15” platform

The decision is primarily based on application robustness, deployment flexibility, and overall palletizing performance considerations.

Reach Considerations for Palletizing Applications

For palletizing applications, robot reach has a major impact on deployment flexibility and long-term application reliability.

The longer reach of the UR20 significantly reduces layout constraints and allows the palletizing system to handle a wider range of pallet sizes, product dimensions, and workstation configurations. In practice, this helps reduce deployment compromises and improves overall application robustness.

A shorter-reach platform based on the UR15 would introduce additional layout limitations that are less desirable in palletizing environments.

Speed and Safety Considerations

The increased operating speed of the UR15 can introduce additional safeguarding requirements depending on the palletizing application and deployment environment.

In many cases, a higher-payload robot operating at reduced speed provides a more practical palletizing approach. This is particularly true for applications using dual-pick strategies, where robots such as the UR20 or UR30 can move multiple products simultaneously while maintaining efficient cycle times.

The UR30 also offers a reach profile similar to the UR15 while providing additional payload capacity better suited for palletizing applications.

Limited Benefits of a Dedicated UR15 Palletizing Platform

Developing a dedicated palletizing platform around the UR15 would still inherit the reach limitations associated with the robot.

Compared to existing PE20, AX20, and AX30 solutions, the operational advantages would remain limited for most palletizing deployments. Existing Robotiq palletizing platforms already cover the vast majority of common palletizing applications while offering greater flexibility for future production changes.

As illustrated in the coverage graph above:

  • Most palletizing simulations already fall within the PE20 +5 range
  • AX20 and AX30 platforms provide broader payload and height coverage
  • The number of applications uniquely enabled by a hypothetical “AX15” platform remains limited

Recommended Alternatives

Depending on the application requirements, the following Robotiq palletizing platforms are recommended instead of the UR15:

  • PE20 – suitable for standard palletizing applications and common pallet formats
  • AX20 – suitable for higher pallet heights and increased payload requirements
  • AX30 – suitable for larger payloads and demanding palletizing applications

These platforms provide better overall coverage, flexibility, and deployment robustness for palletizing operations.

Conclusion

The UR15 remains compatible with many Robotiq products and automation solutions. However, Robotiq palletizing solutions are not supported on the UR15 platform due to reach limitations, palletizing deployment constraints, and application safety considerations related to higher operating speeds.

For palletizing applications, Robotiq recommends using the PE20, AX20, or AX30 platforms depending on the payload, reach, and throughput requirements of the application.
