White Paper : Flexible Fixturing for Robotic Welding Applications

The robotic welding process is one manufacturing process that is worth automating. Even if this looks simple, robotic welding brings many challenges such as:
  • Designing a custom jig for each part, which can become very expensive.
  • Changing jigs each time the model in production changes, which increases down time.
  • Needing a human operator to feed the robotic welder with parts, which is not a value-added contribution to production process.

We, at Robotiq, had the idea to solve these issues by using flexible end effectors to: handle, position and fix a part for a robot welder. Having this in mind, we have proceeded to test our electric grippers in a real robotic welding environment to see how they perform.
